Increase Your Store’s F.A.T. with Oatmeal While Keeping Guests Lean

Oatmeal-ImageOatmeal is a great way to increase the F.A.T. within your business. We’ve discussed F.A.T in past blogs,  as essentially convincing your customers to visit more often “Frequency”, sell them more stuff “Ticket Average” or “Average” and get new customers in the door “Trial”. Increasing your F.A.T. essentially increases your bottom line. How can Oatmeal help with this?

Oatmeal has recently become a top seller in many coffee shops for it’s healthy nature (whole grains), ease of eating on the go and keeping you full longer. Customers will tend to come into your shop more frequently when they know you have more to offer.

Strictly speaking, most coffee shops get the most traffic during morning hours, giving customers their caffeine boost for the day. This is a great time to increase your ticket average with Oatmeal as a breakfast option. Having it displayed right at your coffee bar reminds customers of their need for a nutritious breakfast and the convenience of your service. Many customers will grab it as an afterthought while waiting for their beverage.  They are already purchasing their coffee from you, why not breakfast too?

Using oatmeal promotions between 12pm – 2 pm like, “25% off a oatmeal with a purchase of a specialty beverage”, is a great way to encourage customers to come back for another beverage and use oatmeal as a quick lunch or snack. This way you will encourage customers during different day parts, and possibly multiple times a day!

Believe it or not, there are some people who just don’t love coffee (gasp!), but by offering oatmeal and promoting it with posters in your windows, you could start drawing in these customers for an easy breakfast. While they stop by for a quick, healthy snack, they may then be tempted by the teas and smoothies you sell, too. Also, consider even promoting a special and healthy “smoothie and oatmeal combo” for more traffic in your shop.

Stockton Graham offers two ready to serve oatmeal options your guests will love, Umpqua Oats and Modern Oats, both boasting the delicious additions of nuts and dried fruits. These are convenient for customers who grab and go, and need a food that can keep up. Everything is in the cup – all they need to add is hot water, which a coffee shop obviously has! We’ve also explored a more cost effective way to offer oatmeal that is flavorful and enjoyable to your sit down customers in our Oatmeal Done Easy video blog. Either way, you know your customers, and what suits them best!

New Branding and packaging for Umpqua Oats!

Umpqua-Oats--JackPotWe recently mentioned that Umpqua Oats was making some big changes this year, including a new variety pack. Those who order Umpqua Oats will soon be seeing something else that’s new, the packaging! Here at Stockton Graham we are starting to get in the beginnings of the new branding for the oatmeal, particularly on the new variety packs.  The Oatmeal will continue to be the delicious, filling oatmeal you expect from Umpqua Oats, just with a different looking container.

New-mark-and-logo-webThe new logo uses red as the main color, instead of the orange and brown we used to see. The Umpqua Oats owners, mothers that started creating these tasty grab-n-go’s, say the new packaging is bolder and has color differentials to better help customers recognize the flavors. This visually striking packaging will really grab your customers attention and make them take a closer look.

So, expect to see these new looking packages in your shipments soon! In addition to new packaging and branding, Umpqua Oats is promising new flavors in 2013! The 10 Best Ways to Market to Local Schools As A Specialty Beverage Retailer

Your local school system is an excellent target for increasing sales. The opportunities for attracting repeat business are seemingly endless. Here are a few ideas on how your coffee shop could benefit:

-After receiving the proper clearance with administrators, focus on making one visit per month to a different local school. Come armed with airpots of your house blend, coupons and bakery items to give away and head straight to the teacher’s lounge. Chat up the teachers and don’t forget to leave behind some branded mugs at the coffee pot.

Cater a meeting of the Parent Teacher Association. Many times these meetings are held too early for attendees to have had dinner and not too late for a cup of coffee. Set-up a table in a high-traffic area for parents to grab a snack and a cup of coffee as attendees are meeting and greeting. Decaf and coupons should be in order, too.

Become a book donation drop-off point and give a discount to customers for bringing in used books.

-If you happen to be lucky enough to be near a high school or university, offer to host student organization meetings with group discounts to encourage purchases.

-Younger children are always selling something for school. Why not sell retail bags of your coffee for booster clubs? All of Stockton Graham and Co.’s coffee is available in retail, 12 oz. bags, which are ideal for an undertaking such as this. If you need pricing, be sure to contact your Customer Care Associate at (800) 835-5943. Based on your needs, we can customize a solution.

-Constant discounts for teachers and administrators.

What about grabbing attention to and from school? We always encourage our Stockton Graham & Co. customers to ask, Where are my customers coming from when they visit the shop and where do they go when they leave? Chances are, a large majority of patrons will be either heading to or coming from the school. With that in mind, ask yourself, What would I want and need if I was driving the car pool van? What would the kids need?

Revamp your kids menu. Think of every child in the car pool van as a potential customer. How many sales do you lose out on when mom or dad grabs only one mocha and splits? In the morning, juice boxes and naturally decaffeinated red espresso-based drinks make for nice add-on sales. Also, push hot chocolate, slushes made with your syrup and add lots of toppings to get kids to buy with their eyes.

-Offer discounts to students (and the parents of students) who have been named to the Honor Roll.

Add a healthier grab and go food item. Many parents don’t want to sacrifice health for quick service and convenience. One awesome option is Umpqua Oats. With Umpqua Oats, your customers don’t have to sacrifice anything…and you don’t have to sacrifice speed and consistency. For additional tips on how to position oatmeal in your location, check out this previous blog entry, HERE.

Hold a school supply drive. Pass out discounts to customers who bring in binders, calculators, pencils, etc.

Practical Product Positioning of Umpqua Oats

Umpqua Oats nutritious, delicious and fast oatmeal has only been in our warehouse for a couple of weeks now, but it’s already flying out of here! The demand for a quick, easy and healthy oatmeal option is becoming an expectation at the retail level – just ask McDonald’s and Starbucks.

The best part about Umpqua Oats? You can offer a high quality product with almost no capital investment on your part. If you have a hot water source and a spoon, you can serve Umpqua Oats in your business. Concerned about employee waste? Portions are easily controlled – just add water to the fill line printed on the tub and pass along to a customer.

We’ve been asked a few questions about how to position the product in terms of price point and against other items in the coffee house. Here’s a recap of a recent conversation our Thom Swain had with the owner of a multi-unit coffee house owner who has used Umpqua Oats for a few weeks now:

They sell a cup of Umpqua Oats for $3.40. He said customers haven’t really commented on the price, and he’s been happy with sales. When he looks at other breakfast items he sells, such as muffins, scones, etc., the most he will make is about $1 and some change on those items. He used that info in his pricing tactic for the oatmeal.

Market the oatmeal as an alternative to their baked goods, which should attract more health-conscious consumers. Customers may be passing on baked goods if they are watching their calorie count, and since the most that a retailer would make on baked goods is perhaps as much as $1.25 or so, they would then be capturing add-on sales they might have missed otherwise. Further, baked goods have a one-to-two day shelf-life while Umpqua Oats has one year, so, all-in-all, it’s a very low-risk investment for a product that will increase ticket averages.

Other pricing options include:

Offering a combo with a small cup of coffee to add value and make the price point more attractive (e.g., $4.00 for a cup of oatmeal & a 12 oz. cup of coffee).

Offer price breaks for purchasing multiple tubs. Eat one for breakfast and take one to the office for a mid-afternoon snack.
