Memorial Day Cocktail and Mocktail Recipes

Sun. Sand. And the day off! Everyone is getting excited about the Memorial Day three-day weekend. Traditionally the holiday signals the end of the school year and the start of summer vacation for children across the country. But, of course, it means so much more. This year, as you celebrate our fallen soldiers, and the beginning of summer, remember what a great time it is for a refreshing cocktail or mocktail.

Cocktails for Memorial DayServing up a refreshing cocktail is one of the best ways for your business to distance yourself from the competition and help your customers stay cool as the temperature heats up. From a cool Mint Julep to a fruity Sangria the options for that perfect drink to make you stand out are endless. For those of your customers that are either to young for alcohol or choose not to indulge, a non-alcoholic alternative that is sure to please their palate.

Mocktails are the less expensive, calorie light, everyone-friendly alternative. By choosing to serve the non-alcohol alternative your store can be more profitable—since alcohol is often the most expensive ingredient in a drink and consumers will usually pay the same price for it.

We’ve come up with a few cocktail and mocktail recipes that are sure to be a crowd favorite and wow all your customers.

Preparing for Back to School

With the school year rapidly approaching, it’s time to start planning on how to get students/faculty members near your café to become your customers and increase sales.  One important and easy preparation for this is to make sure your store is stocked on all of the items you regularly offer!  This could also include making sure you have adequate help on the schedule for peak hours, thus keeping the flow of customers moving comfortably and reducing waiting periods that may create a bad experience for people short on time that want a quick cup for the road.

Offering student discounts is a great way to create traffic in your café. Use the student’s ID as an identifier for the discounts. The students will let their peers know about the great savings and tastes your shop has to offer!

Another helpful strategy would be to make your presence known at nearby schools, as some people may not know your cafe is close.  A couple proactive suggestions are to drop off brewed coffee at the school along with coupons, drop off branded traveler mugs that can be used as prizes for events/giveaways, offer to host PTA meetings or other after school programs and if the opportunity arises take out an ad in the year book or school paper!  Although this may increase traffic in your  café it is most important that these new visitors become repeat customers which is done with great customer service, knowledge of your product and of course preparing your product in a way that puts yours above the rest!

Independence Day Recipes for Your Coffee Shop!

4th-of-JulyJuly 4th is a holiday that involves a lot of time spent outdoors in the warm summer air. Whether watching fireworks  or a parade, spending the day by the water or just grilling, your customers will need to be refreshed this Independence Day. We have gotten together, some of our favorite July 4th recipes to serve in your specialty beverage shop, easily at a cookout or other celebration. Berries are really popular around Independence Day because most of them are in season in the summer, July is even “National Blueberry Month”. Whether it is frozen and blended, caffeine filled or sugar filled, satisfy your customers this Independence Day with some fun specialty drinks!

As mentioned in our 4th of July Promotions Blog, Iced Americanos are a fun drink to focus on for July 4th, the day we celebrate American Independence. To make a “Berry Americano”, use ¾ oz. of your berry of choice (blueberry, raspberry, strawberry…) syrup, and add to a glass of 2 shots of chilled espresso, ¾ a cup cold water, a ¼ a cup of half & half and ice. The half and half really makes the flavor show up more with creamy goodness.

You can make a “Red, White & True Latte” for your coffee lovers as well . For a 16 oz. drink, fill a glass with ice, add 6 oz. of milk, 2 shots of espresso, 0.75 oz. of raspberry syrup, 0.75 oz. of peach syrup and stir.

To cool your customers off, you can serve a “Blueberry Cream Soda”.  Fill your 16 oz. glass with ice and add 1 oz. of blueberry syrup, ½ oz. of French vanilla syrup and 7 oz. of sparkling water.  This tasty and bubbly drink will satisfy anyone looking for a caffeine free drink option in your shop.

For smoothies you can whip up a “Red, White and Blueberry Smoothie”. If you use powdered mixes, make your standard smoothie drink with a ¼ a cup of fresh or frozen strawberries and blueberries. Drizzle white chocolate on your cup to decorate, or on top of the smoothie. If you prefer pour over smoothies, just choose your mix that contains strawberries and blueberries and decorate the cup with white chocolate.

Lemonades are full of nostalgia for the summers past, so you can’t have a 4th of July celebration without this classic! We have DaVinci Gourmet Fruit Innovations that make a great classic lemonade with just a few pumps, water and ice! Add another flavor for a fun and fruity drink. Another Lemonade twist is Frozen Flavored Lemonades. DaVinci Gourmet and Jet are offering an Arctic Lemonade promotion right now with blood orange, raspberry and strawberry Fruit Innovations. Adding 3 pumps of these syrups to the lemonade mix, gives this classic refreshing beverage something new and delicious!

If Tea is your customers choice for a refreshing beverage, it is very easy to add syrups to make a special drink, with an up charge and little cost to you. A shot of any flavor can bring life to a regular tea. Try a “Raspberry Tea Sparkler” this Independence Day. To 7 oz. of tea, add 1 oz. of raspberry syrup and 2 oz. of sparkling water or soda water. This gives the tea a carbonated and flavorful kick. Flavored teas are one of the fastest growing specialty beverages in the US, so if you already serve tea, flavored tea is an easy way to add more variety and profits.

If you use pour over smoothies, create a “Firework Smoothie” for this 4th! Use Strawberry Banana smoothie mix (about 6 to 7 oz. depending on brand) and mix in some vanilla cream base powder (this also depends on brand, but about 1 tablespoon). Blend the mixes with 16 oz. of ice and 2 strawberries for texture. Top with whipped cream and sprinkles!

Celebrate Summer With Promotions in Your Café!

Summer-beachThe warm weather is coming, and summer will be here before we know it, so now is a great time to start planning your summer promotions! June 21st is the official “First Day of Summer”, so it’s time to let your customers know about it with summer menu items and promotions to celebrate those refreshing beverages. With schools getting out and the absence of all night studiers needing their caffeine fix, many Cafés have to adjust for a different customer base.

Get your customers to vote from 4 different types of “summer” beverages to add to your menu on the first day of summer. On the weekend of June 21st, bring in the new menu item with a bang by offering specials on it and pairing it with tasty snacks from your shop. We suggest getting them to vote from options you don’t offer year round like a flavored iced latte, a flavored iced chai, a summer smoothie, a frozen lemonade or a flavored iced tea. Make these drinks fun by giving them summer or tropical themed names!

Iced beverages become a favorite when the temperature rises. You should continue to offer your same delicious coffees, but make sure they are all available iced. There are many different ways to create iced coffees: the Toddy process, chilling espressos, pour over methods, concentrates, etc., so there is no excuse for you to not be offering this delicious coffee option! To inspire regulars to try iced coffees, give coupons to customers who buy morning drip coffee. Have the coupon set for use in slower, afternoon hours to encourage those morning customers to come back.

Designate a week of Summer called “Iced is Nice” and offer discounts on iced beverages. Whether iced coffee, Italian sodas, flavored teas or lemonades, get your customers to celebrate by trying all your refreshing drink options! Flavored Teas and Italian sodas are a great way to make drinks with syrups you already have. Our vendor DaVinci reports that 55% of those who drink iced tea would be likely to try a flavored iced Tea. If your café serves iced tea already, adding extra flavor can add to the menu price without costing you much at all (and increasing profits for your shop)! Flavored Teas are also a “healthier” alternative to all the sugars and calories that can be loaded into coffee drinks or smoothies. This is a great way to appeal to your more health conscious customers.

Father’s Day is June 16th this year, and just like with Mother’s Day, encourage your patrons to bring their parent in for a drink with a BOGO promotion. If they buy something for themselves, they get a free one for their father! Offer $2 off on your retail coffee for gifts the week before. Remind customers that freshly roasted coffee is a great gift for any occasion, especially for a Dad! And don’t forget to offer gift cards for sale!

If there is a pool or other popular summer venue near your shop, reach out to them for co-op marketing opportunities such as hanging up flyers and posters for your events and promotions. Remind their guests how easy it is to drop by your shop on their way to or from the pool or concert. Summer is a big time for festivals and outdoor events. Try to volunteer or set up a booth with your shop’s name prominent and some of your iced coffee for sale. This will show your involvement in the community and help you reach out to potential new customers.

Smoothies are very popular in the summer months (see our newest blog on why you should make them a part of your menu). Consider a smoothie “Happy Hour” with discounted smoothies from 4 pm to 7 pm. This will give customers a reason to come in for a treat after work, or a day running errands.

The important thing when having special events is to market them properly. Social media blast your followers, set up flyers, table tents & posters, and have your baristas reminding customers of all your specials. Ask customers to “check in” with Foursquare when they visit your shop for an extra discount off their purchase! Set up a “social media special” for customers who write reviews for your shop on Yelp, Google +, Facebook or any other review site. Have them show you their review for a percentage off their coffee. This will help you get more marketing out about your shop and bring in new customers!
