This year Valentine’s Day falls on Saturday, February 14, so your shop should have V-Day themed events and specials all week! Show your customers how much you care by giving them “Valentines”. Keep a few Valentines (aka coupons for discounted drinks) by the register to give out to regular and loyal customers all week.
Be sure to promote your Valentine’s day specials on your Social Media accounts, website and newsletters. You should also have posters, flyers, table toppers and chalk boards promoting any specials in your store. Make sure, as with any special event, your store is decorated to subtly remind your customers of the holiday and the specials they could take advantage of.
On Valentine’s Day, share the love by offering a special discounted beverage all day! Or, have a small “treat” ready to show your appreciation like a small chocolate for each customer or a free flavor shot! You might also encourage those who have significant others to make visiting your shop part of their date night by offering a buy-one-get-one deal on drinks later in the evening!

Smoothies and frappes are among the fastest growing segments in the specialty beverage industry. According to our product vendors, frappe sales bloomed to $4.3 billion in 2012 alone. Smoothies are also on the rise… they are increasing at a sales rate of $2 billion per year and expected to reach the $9 billion plateau (worldwide) by 2015. There is money to be made with these blended specialty drinks, and Stockton Graham & Co. is here to help you!
Frozen coffees and frappes first hit the stage in the late 90’s when Starbucks introduced the “Frappuccino®”. From then on massive franchises and independent, locally owned shops alike have implanted these frozen treats into their beverage menus with tremendous success. The flavors available are endless, drinks can be blended with milk alternatives for those with dairy aversions, and health supplements can be easily added to every drink! Frappes also appeal to coffee lovers when the weather is warm, and hot drinks, like drip coffee or espresso, seem less appealing. With leading industry brand names such as Big Train, Caffe D’ Amore, Dr. Smoothie- Café Essentials and recently Torani Real Cream, adding frappes to your menu can nearly quadruple your margin per ounce.
Fruit smoothies are nothing new to this industry, but in the past few years, their sales have reached all-time highs. Fact is, only about half of the population in the U.S. claims to be “coffee drinkers”, so there is still a large market for alternative specialty beverages. Smoothie sales are sky rocketing, not only due to the fact that smoothies are so delicious, but also because of the diversity of their market. The smoothie market appeals to children, adults, the health conscious, customers looking for a sweet treat, or those needing a meal replacement to get through their day. Nearly every fast food franchise has made smoothies a permanent fixture on their menu, showing how valuable they are to the specialty beverage menu. Here at Stockton Graham & Co., we offer leading smoothie brands such as Dr. Smoothie, Torani, Jet, Monin and more, so be sure not to miss out this smoothie season!
Dr. Smoothie is offering a promotion right now to show you how well supplements fit into your smoothie business. Our vendors know that blended drinks are a big seller, and they are looking to meet all your needs in this market.
If one or both of these drinks are missing from your shop’s menu, this is the perfect time to add them. Stockton Graham & Co. and Dr. Smoothie are teaming up to give you a great summer promotion! When you purchase 2 cases or more of Dr. Smoothie product, request your FREE 1 (3lb) jar of Smoothie Ceuticals Vanilla Whey Protein Concentrate! Limit of one promotional jar per customer, offer ends on May 31st 2013.
Dr. Smoothie recommends adding whey protein to their 100% and Classic smoothies to make them healthier, creamy and more valuable. Many shops charge an extra 50 cents to a dollar for the scoop of protein, thus raising profits! For example: it would cost you $1.64 to make a 100% crushed Dr. Smoothie smoothie with protein (based on product cost only), and if you charged $5 for it (an extra $1 for the protein) your profit on that drink would be $3.36! That’s a 28% increase in gross profit per drink.
Whey fluffs up when blended into the fruit concentrate, meaning you use less Dr. Smoothie fruit smoothie. This saves you at least 1oz of smoothie concentrate a drink, and in a bottle that offers roughly 8.6 drinks, you’ll be saving 8ozs of smoothie concentrate with each bottle: which means 2 more drinks per bottle!
The easiest recipe for using whey to make a 16oz drink is: 4oz of smoothie concentrate, 2oz of water, 1 scoop of whey protein and a 14oz cup of ice. You can mix smoothie concentrate flavors or add fruit for even more exciting menu options!
Everyone is looking for ways to be healthier with their tasty beverages, and many people are using protein smoothies as meal substitutes. The athletic community requires more protein to help get leaner muscle and many use supplements as a way to receive this protein. Whey protein is low in saturated fat and carbohydrates, which makes it a beneficial substitute. *
With this gift of whey, your shop can try out new drinks and start targeting a healthier market. This will introduce new clientele to your business and increase your bottom line. To take advantage of this offer, be sure to mention this promotion to your customer care associate upon ordering!

New Year’s can be an easily overlooked holiday with all of the excitement of Christmas ending. As a coffee shop owner, it is very important to stay on top of promotions this time of year, so you don’t see post holiday sales drop. Drops in sales can be related to the annual influx of dieting or personal financial budgets brought on by New Year’s resolutions. This year, most holiday sales may also be impacted by the expiration of the payroll tax credit, which may put further pressure on customer spending. By having New Year’s events and promotions, you can keep your sales level up until the time when resolutions take affect.
Offering more health conscious menu items is a profitable idea to help your customers keep their resolutions. Read our blog on adding these products to your store. It can be as easy as supplementing your normal syrups for sugar-free and offering soy or almond milk choices. If you do make these little changes, always let your customers know about them by having signage promoting your new options, and don’t forget social media. Stockton Graham & Co’s Thom Swain says, “Keeping your barista in the know can go even further than signage, discounts or coupons. They know the customers and can suggest sugar-options to save upwards of 200 calories, to those wishing to “cut back” this time of year.” You will be helping your customer keep their resolution and drawing in new customers interested in your healthier options. It’s also a great idea to plan an open house night where you showcase your new menu items and let customers sample them.
Try targeting local gyms with your new healthier items. Gym-goers love smoothies after their workouts to replenish their electrolytes, so let your shop be the place they refuel. Talk to the manager about hanging signs or flyers where their customers can see or having special discounts for their members. They will enjoy being able to give their members something special, and you will enjoy their members becoming patrons of your shop! If they have an open house or special event, see if you can set up a sampling table for your coffee or smoothies. You could do a raffle for 4 months free gym membership from your shop, every time they purchase a specialty beverage their name goes into the pot. Also, consider adding supplements to your smoothies or Frappes. Whey protein and energy boosts are just a few of the options you can include for an extra price to help the healthy conscious get their energy back.
Another idea is to have a special “happy hour” on December 31st with promotions on coffee to help people make it to midnight for the ball drop. For example buy one latte get an extra espresso shot for free, doubling the caffeine so they can celebrate the New Year right!
It’s another year to sell and promote specialty coffee and beverages, so have fun with your ideas, and we at Stockton Graham & Co. will keep offering more tips! We wish you and your business the best in the New Year!
