Keep Your Shop Free of Germs!

The other day I was reading The News & Observer and I noticed an article on a recent study that was conducted by scientists at the University of Arizona to test the amount of germs found on the lids of coffee cups, handled by coffee shop employees. When the lids were swabbed, researchers were astounded at the amount of contaminated lids that were discovered. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), when someone has even the common cold, they can leave viruses on just about anything that they touch.

After reading this article, it made me realize the importance of proper health regulations and guidelines in all coffee shops, especially during this time of the year. Luckily, Stockton Graham’s Barista Certification Program not only teaches your new baristas how to serve you customers properly and hygienically. When it comes to cups, our barista instructors indicate the importance of grabbing a cup at least one to two inches away from the rim of the cup, or if possible, stacking the cups with the tops facing down, so your baristas are always handling the cups from the bottom. These methods are practiced to make sure that all possible contact is away from where your customer’s mouths would go. Lids on the other hand, are best stacked in front of the counter rather than behind, so customers can handle them themselves. Once your barista has finished the customer’s drink, they can then instruct the customer where they can then find the lids. This ensures that their own hands are the only hands to touch the lids. Lastly, when possible, handle money after you have prepared the customers drink, and remember to wash your hands as often as possible. According to the CDC, money has more germs than just about anything else that we touch on a daily basis.

Just a few precautionary tips like these can make a serious difference in your shop. Cleanliness is a critical factor in all coffee shops.
