History

SGC-historyStockton Graham & Co. history began over 20 years ago. Seeking the American dream of becoming entrepreneurs, our founders thought the Raleigh market was ready for a coffee house concept that offered high quality coffees, and handcrafted espresso drinks in a comforting atmosphere. In 1994, this concept became Classic Coffees, a 784 sq ft. espresso and coffee shop offering some of the best coffees in the Triangle.

Not content with one small store, the founders opted to expand the original store in 1996 to nearly 2,000 sq ft. This included a 12 kg coffee roaster and the beginning of their exploration into the art of roasting coffee. During the next several years, the company expanded into four retail locations operating in Raleigh and landed wholesale accounts throughout North Carolina and Virginia. They began selling their coffee to other coffeehouses, gourmet specialty stores, fine dining and other establishments wanting to serve craft-roasted specialty beverages. Due to this high demand, Classic Coffees Roasting Company was created as a wholesale roaster and distributor.

As the wholesale roasting and retail stores expanded, the founders were frequently asked by their customers if they could purchase syrups, chocolate sauces, smoothie concentrates and frappe mixes to use in their own stores. While not in the original business model, the founders recognized that in order to attract enough customers each day, these coffee shops needed to offer a wide array of espresso and handcrafted drinks, and these syrups and mixes would allow that. Blending sales of specialty products into the business model demanded more space than could be accommodated in the retail location. 1999 & 2000 were big years for the company’s growth, and Classic Coffee Roasting Co. was moved out to a small corner of the building at the current 4320 Delta Lake Drive address in Raleigh.

To better reflect the wholesale mission and values, the name of the company was changed to Stockton Graham & Co., and a long term vision was built with a goal of helping customers succeed in the business of coffee. The company also saw some of its original founders depart, and the chief operating officer become a shareholder. To allow the management team to continue to focus on building the wholesale roaster and distribution targets of the company, the retail locations were sold.

Today, the company owns and occupies the entire building, operating production roasters up to 60 kg in size to provide artisan craft-roasted coffees to customers across the United States. Stockton Graham & Co. has a team of specialty coffee experts skilled and knowledgeable in nearly every facet of the coffee industry who are committed to helping coffee businesses succeed.
